英语写作表达推荐（第一期）

写在前面：

今天为大家介绍一下新出的栏目：英语写作表达推荐，在这个专栏中，我们会定期从经济学人等外刊中整理适合用于写作的表达。本期先讲三个常用于表示“举例子”、“原因”、“让步”的短语。

“举例子”

除了我们常用的“for example/ such as”还可以尝试用：

1. Take... as an example

eg: 讲述新冠肺炎对人们日常生活造成极大影响，以我的生活为例时，可写：Take myself as an example,...

2. To name a few

eg: 写新冠病毒对人们日常生活造成极大影响时，可以举例造成哪些影响：Our daily life is greatly affected by the novel coronavirus. To name a few,...

3. ... provides an example of / for ...

eg: 2020年这场疫情对世界经济造成重大影响，以服务业为例时，可以这样描述: The epidemic has caused significant impact to the world’s economy. Service industry provides an example of...

“表原因”

除了我们平常用的because/ because of/ owing to/ thanks to,还可以用：

1. by virtue of

eg: Mary won this game by virtue of her excellent quality.

2. on account of

eg: Our party is canceled on account of the pandemic.

3. ... stem from ...

eg: The differences may stem from environmental factors. 这种差异可能源于环境差异。在这句话中，the differences指结果, environmental factors指原因。

与“因为；由于”相似的表达还有“鉴于”：in view of/ given that/ in light of/ on the ground of

eg: In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures should be taken before things get worse.

eg: Given that the teacher has made some serious mistakes, the school dismisses him.

“表让步”

除了平时我们常用的though/although/even though，还可以用：

1. despite the fact that + 句子

eg：Some adolescents are fond of smoking, despite of the fact that it could do harm to their lungs.

2.It is true that..., but...

eg: It is true that smoking harms our health, but some people still keep this habit.

3.把我们平常用的however/ nevertheless稍作修改，句子也可以变得更加地道。

如谈到“吸烟对人体健康有害时”，平常可能会写：

Smoking does harm to our health. However, some people still keep this habit.

但稍作修改，句子会显得更加高级：

Smoking does harm to our health; however, some people still keep this habit.（使用“分号”的形式）

【拓展】do harm to 还可以修改成：be detrimental to即：Smoking is detrimental to our health; however, some people still keep this habit.#英文写作#
