Life Exhibition of Cai Lun’s Temple
公元63年，蔡伦出生在桂阳郡城南一普通士人家，今耒阳市蔡侯祠即其故宅旧址。永平末（公元75年）被籍没入宫当宦官，曾任小黄门、中常侍、中常侍兼尚方令、长乐太仆等宦官官职。最后被封为食邑三百户的龙亭侯。
In AD 63, Cai Lun was born in an ordinary family in the south of Guiyang Prefecture, namely, the modern day Leiyang, Hunan Province during the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the last years (AD 75) of Yongping during the reign of Emperor Ming of Han Dynasty, he was taken into the imperial palace to serve as a court eunuch. At the very beginning, he took the posts of Huangmen Eunuch of Assitant Minister at a low level and a Regular Palace Attendant. Later, he was promoted with the title of Shangfang Ling, an office in charge of manufacturing instruments and weapons. In the end, he was titled with Marquis Longhou, having jurisdiction over 300 households.
蔡伦为人敦厚朴实、谨行慎言，做事认真尽心，不与腐朽势力同流合污，对恶势力灵活地进行斗争；善于观察事物、思考问题，为“便于人”而创造发明。
Honest and modest, Cai Lun always worked in a cautious and conscientious manner. He never had himself associated with corrupted forces. Instead, he skillfully fought against vicious power. Besides, Cai, a good observer and thinker, invented the composition for paper along with the papermaking process to "be easy for people".
蔡伦有才学，“蔡太仆之弩以及龙亭九年之剑，至今擅名天下。”曾监督并参加《东观汉记》的编写订正，于公元105年，蔡伦成功地发明植物纤维纸及造纸术，是蔡伦才学的集中表现。
Talented and learned, Cai once supervised and participated in the compilation and amendments of the Dong Guan Han Ji, a record of history from Emperor Guangwu to Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty. There is a remark writing like this: “the crossbow and sword manufactured by Cai Lun is known by all till now. ” In AD 105, he successfully invented the plant fiber paper and the paper-making process, reflecting his versatility.
建初七年（公元82年），蔡伦秉承窦太后讽旨，参与了审理宋贵人“巫蛊”案件，被迫卷入宫廷斗争，公元121年5月，宋贵人之孙汉安帝亲政时，追查审宋案，命蔡伦自至廷尉受审，蔡伦耻于受辱，饮药而死，年59岁，葬封地——今陕西省龙亭铺镇。
In the 7th year of Jianchu (AD 82) during the reign of Emperor Su of the Eastern Han Dynasty , with the order from the Empress Dou, Cai took part in the trial of Consort Song’s case and was involved in palace intrigue. In May AD 121, Consort Song’s grandson Emperor An of Han Dynasty assumed power and started to investigated the case again. Cai was sent to the Justices Office in the Central Government of Han Dynasty for trial. He was ashamed of humiliation and committed suicide by drinking poison at the age of 59, buried in present Longtingpu Town, Shaanxi Province.
元嘉元年（公元151年），汉桓帝命崔实、延笃为蔡伦立传，写入《东观汉记》。
In the 1st year of Yuanjia (AD 151) during the reign of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty ordered Cui Shi and Yan Du to write a biography of Cai Lun and compiled it into the Dong Guan Han Ji.
